Assignment 3 - 300 words narrative & storyboard

When a village develops into a city, it means urbanization took place of the idea of the focus of life, railways and roads shaped the spatial structure of the city. This is the idea I want to convey in this video.

A man travels around, he find there is a remote control in front, and there is a big button says “START” and other buttons with different words on them. When he presses the “START” button, something is falling down from the sky. That is a house in Tetris shape which can be controlled by the remote control with its position and direction, it is the same with the tetris game. He uses the remote control to place the houses falling down from the sky on the ground. After he places all the houses on the ground, it becomes a small village with random settings of the houses but he feels happy with it. Then he gets into the village, he presses other buttons on the remote control, all the buildings are growing taller, and the village becomes bigger with lots of tetris houses. It has become to a city. People come to this city and build the city, he feels very happy about this.

The Influence of Information and Communication Technology on Spatial Development and Planning

http://cumincad.scix.net/data/works/att/6fff.content.03978.pdf

One of the driving forces of the rapid development of our society is the new information and communication technology, ICT. The application of ICT means we will have both conventional, physical settings and the virtual world functioning at the same time without replacing each other. ICT influences the society with various aspects, such as production and service, location of offices, wireless communications, housing, traffic, land use planning, etc. By the use of automation in industrial processes leads the reduction of labour, and the relocation of production to cheaper places as some enterprises are restructured to network companies. Virtual education and telemedicine are developing fast and the service standard has been improved which make everything easier. Good and fast connections bring flexibility to work with cost-affectivity. Wireless connections and communications will have a great impact on human life and human interaction. As services and commerce will happen more online with networks, traffic will be reduced, emails will replace the traditional postal services, and the separation of work and home will disappear. The development of cities and regions because of ICT will be successes by considering their own benefit from the opportunities new technologies provided and the changes in their production, marketing and delivery, virtuality will also be a new key function.

Assignment 3 - 150 words Draft

The concept of my final video is about to explain the evolution of architecture which is expand from Assignment 2. Evolution of architecture has several parts: by considering the machine in architecture, architects considered about construction of a building and stability into the plan of a building and its operation, this leads the conflict between Form Idea and Matter; form Idea was a set of geometrical proportional operations, but Matter focuses more on material and physical size. However, the architects concern more on how to find a plan which the maximum service can be archived through the smallest number of people rather than creates more usable spaces with less material in mechanics. Later on, as the way of people think, perception and live changes through the time, the architects focuses on how to gain higher hypertectual picturesque quality, which leads details, spatial construction, natural and materiality become more important in the design process, and landscape becomes a natural accessorizing feature of the building.

Narrative

Since the social environment is changing through the time, the way of people think and live is changing at the same time, buildings must follow the step of the time. As the idea of mechanism gets into the designers’ minds, buildings become more and more machine-like with various forms and materials, this is an evolution from the past. The traditional ways of designing buildings seem to be antiquated and inefficient in the contemporary environment, buildings were in the similar shapes and materials with massive constructions but not enough useful space. Nowadays, designers consider how to plan the building which will maximise the service through the smallest number of people, and buildings have landscape as an accessorizing feature to gain an optimised picturesque quality. In my animation, I made how buildings change through the time, and then lead to the interior the building to show that interior planning is also an important design process of the building.

"Hypertextural Picturesque" and "Systemic Delay"

The two articles focus on the explanation of the evolvement of architecture and the way people think and live. The landscape in modernity has been figured as either supplemental or an accessorizing feature to the design of the building and detailed consideration becomes more important, which is different with those traditional ways of thinking, to gain the best “Hypertectual Picturesque”, details, materiality, spatial construction, natural, etc, these elements must be considered to satisfy the fast-pace change of the environment and the way people think. Since architecture involves both designer’s conceptual intention and actual material process, the previous ways of programme are not suitable and efficient in the current environment, contemporary design processes must be dynamic and fluid with more experimental methodologies to gain infinite creativity on the “Systemic Delay” between the initial concepts and its material forms.

The Machine in Architectural Thinking

Theoretical Context

The combination of mechanism and architecture has been widely used by designers these days, as mechanism focuses on the beauty of the nature of great machines, such as straight lines, right angles and grid patterns. By thinking of the use of machines in buildings, the very first thing to consider is about construction, later about all other aspects of the building. The mechanization of design concerns more on the problems of construction and stability into the plan of the building and its operation, since Galilean mechanics persists the concept of “many devices which succeed on a small scale do not work on a large scale”. But there are still some different considerations between mechanics and architecture, in mechanics, it is for a structure without collapsing and for less material, creates more usable spaces; in architecture, the designers concern more on how to find a plan which the maximum service can be achieved through the smallest number of people.
